Chapter Twenty

Jack

The ride was quiet. We both knew there was a conversation that needed to be had when we got there, but neither of us seemed eager to start. Instead, I reached over and took Sam’s hand, squeezing it in my own. We rode like that in silence, hand in hand, absorbed in our own thoughts.

The quiet continued as I parked, and we walked up to Sam’s door. She fished around for her keys, unlocked the door, and led me inside. It opened up to a small living room on the left with a couch, TV, and fireplace. It was neat, with bright-colored fabrics and pillows brightening up the place.

“It’s nice,” I said from the doorway, and Sam smiled. She took my hand then, placing her purse on the floor. She walked backward as she guided me to the couch, but before sitting, she stepped into me, pressing her full body against mine. I was surprised by the move, and even more when she reached up and kissed me. Her hands snaked around my back and held me close to her.

I gave into the kiss without thinking, attacking her mouth and pressing my hips into her. It had been a confusing night, and the pull to lose ourselves into each other for a while was strong. I took her bottom lip between my teeth and bit gently before dipping down to taste her neck and nip along her collarbone. She was eager for me, and I felt her hand pressing my head down lower as she pulled her shirt down, exposing her right breast.

“Yes,” I heard her breathe as my mouth took her tight nipple. I licked eagerly with my tongue, playing the tip and making her nipple harden even further. I let my teeth close around her and gently pulled.

“Fuck me, Jack,” she begged, and there was nothing I wanted to do more. But the unspoken conversation was there between us. The whole ride home I had been working through what I would say, and I knew avoiding it wasn’t helping anyone.

Sam’s hands were at my waist, working my belt open, but I put a hand down and stopped her as I stood up and looked into her eyes.

“God, do I want to,” I groaned, pressing my hips into her again to show her just how much I wanted it. “But we have to talk. I need you to know everything. About what happened back then.”

“I don’t want to know,” Sam said, and it was almost like she was sixteen and pouting about doing homework. I smiled at how adorable it was.

“I know,” I said. “I need you to know. I need you to understand I wasn’t trying to hurt you.”

“Do you ever think it’s better to just leave the past in the past?” she asked.

I could tell she was scared. I knew from our conversation in the parking lot that she wanted answers. My apology then had bought her time to listen. The pain I caused both of us by how I did things needed healing.
